Yahtzee Alienates Poplar Trees (That Bastard)

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Yahtzee’s review of Grand Theft Auto IV officially puts him in an interesting position: It affirms that he doesn’t care for the wai-wai technocolour of Japanese-produced games, but neither is he firm and erect over brown-and-grey gaming.

So I guess he’s a moderate? Balderdash. Who has time to sit on the fence these days.

He brings up a great point about the trees in GTA IV. My family used to vacation on a beach; every time we had a small thunderstorm (mommy said thunder was God was flushing His toilet), the native poplar trees would lie flat on the ground in terrified surrender.

Case: Eros v. Simon (SETTLED 2007) - Second Life

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Somehow this well reported case got overlooked here at the Patent Arcade, and that appears to be because I thought I’d already written about it. In any event, it now gets its own post…

On October 24, 2007, six content owners in Second Life sued Thomas Simon, aka Rase Kenzo, for infringing their copyrights in various online goods. Also included in the complaint were counts for unfair competition and false description of origin, conspiracy, and counterfeiting. The goods included clothing and scripted furniture (aka, sex beds), among other things. After only two months it appears that Mr. Simon saw the light and the plaintiffs proved their point–the case settled in December, 2007, for about $525, and an agreement by Mr. Simon to cease his questionable activities.

At the very least this case is important because it demonstrates the seriousness that many Second Life content creators give to their businesses, treating their intellectual property just as any other business would. The stakes will only get higher as virtual worlds such as Second Life get bigger, and the players have even more money at stake.

New Oddworld game in the works, may be ‘years’ off

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

It’s been more than three years since we last frolicked about in Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath, but according to Maxis co-founder Jeff Braun a new game set in Lorne Lanning’s Oddworld universe is currently in the works. According to Wilfrid Laurier University student newspaper The Cord Weekly, Braun confirmed his involvement with developers Oddworld Inhabitants on the project during a presentation at the school earlier this week.

Few details were revealed about the upcoming game, though Braun noted that the title will feature a “revolutionary new 3-D animation system” and “cinematic quality on a ‘1 to 1 scale’ to that of computer-generated motion pictures,” adding that the same assets could be used to create both a video game and film version in parallel.

This isn’t the first time talk of CG features and Oddworld have been mentioned in the same breath, with Lorne Lanning himself refocusing his company in 2005 to create both games and accompanying CG movies, the first of which was announced a year later as Citizen Siege. However, as that title has yet to see the light of day, it doesn’t exactly surprise us that Braun admits that the next Oddworld release could be “years” away from seeing retail shelves, and may even be released in an episodic format when it’s all said and done.

McDonald’s Japan distributes news and DS demos

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

mcds.jpgBetween May 27 and June 31, you can buy a shrimp burger at a McDonald’s in Japan and learn about the nutrition facts on your DS. During this period Nintendo and the house of the McPork value sandwich will test the Nintendo Spot service in 21 locations. With the Nintendo Spot DS owners can download a compact version of the Nintendo Browser, which connects to a page of McDonald’s news. The top page has links to current McDonald’s promotions and nutritional information.

In an effort to lure gamers into a McDonald’s, Nintendo will offer DS demos and a special present for Pikachu during May 30 and June 19. This isn’t the first time Nintendo made a deal with McDonald’s. The two companies made an agreement to allow DS owners to use their US Wi-Fi service free of charge in 2005.

This may sound strange, but in some regions McDonald’s is actually kind of nice. Some of the McDonald’s stores in Hong Kong have Wi-Fi, flat screen TVs with news and chandeliers.

Awwww baby!

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

A big congratulations goes out to an awesome kind of guy for having a baby! That’s right, Tim Schafer from Double Fine announced that he had a baby girl! Well, I’m guessing Tim himself DIDN’T have the baby, but more like a wife or something.

Men generally don’t have babies. I mean, I’m sure it’s POSSIBLE, but it probably would be a touch on the painful side. Not that it’s not painful for women. I mean, it IS painful for women, but women having babies is way more natural than men having babies.

I think you know where I’m going with this.

Anyways… Congratulation Tim! Raise her to be a lover of adventure games! Maybe she’ll make the next greatest game known to the adventure world!

Joystiq hands-on: Alone in the Dark (360)

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Filed under: PC, Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action, Adventure

With some trepidation, I walked into Atari’s offices today to check out the newest (and quite possibly final) build of Alone in the Dark. With controller in hand, I started a fresh save file … only to have three hours blur by and be bombarded with a never-ending series of cinematic, adrenaline-pumping sequences. I was totally unprepared for Eden Studios’ bold reimagining of the franchise. This is not your father’s Alone in the Dark.

A key point that the Atari representative reiterated throughout my play session was the influence of serialized television in the design of the game. The game is broken up into a series of “episodes,” each ending on a cliffhanger. Players are able to select levels and sequences via a menu that resembles something you’d find on a DVD. Not only can players jump to any level they want, but they can skip to specific “chapters” within each episode, as well. Each episode ends with credits, and each new episode starts with a very cute “Previously on Alone in the Dark” recap. (Interestingly, all the episodes are unlocked when a player starts the game. This means if you get stuck at a certain point, you can simply skip to the next chapter and use the recap to see what you missed. The reasoning behind this? Eden wants everyone to finish this game, no matter how challenging the puzzles may get.)

These trivial changes to the presentation are amusing, but the TV inspiration runs much deeper. One season of a great television show has a clear beginning, middle and end. However, each episode usually focuses on one specific issue in an overarching story arc. Alone in the Dark fully embraces the serialized narrative, and uses it to create stunning set pieces in every chapter of every episode we’ve had an opportunity to play. Alone in the Dark isn’t survival horror like we’ve seen in Silent Hill and Resident Evil. No, it’s also about platforming. It’s about puzzle solving, first person shooting … and even driving. Alone in the Dark really is a great season of 24, albeit one with a supernatural twist.

Sublime joins Guitar Hero: World Tour, Activision confirms previous acts, details

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, Rhythm

Activision made Guitar Hero: Rock Band Edition World Tour official today, confirming the details leaked from the current issue of Game Informer. World Tour will feature an all-master track cast, filled with previously named acts like Van Halen, Linkin Park, and The Eagles, plus today’s confirmation of Sublime and “many more.” The announcement also highlights the “Music Studio” mode (create-a-song), which allows players to “compose, record, edit and share music,” and the 8-player “Battle of the Bands” mode.

World Tour will also feature so-called “new state of the art wireless instruments” (as sorta seen yesterday), meaning mom won’t trip over the coil of wires when she walks in front of the TV and totally destroys the rock mojo; and the still curious, but ambitious sounding promise to add “significantly more localized downloadable music than ever before on all of the next-generation consoles.” Yep, that includes the Wii version (developed by Vicarious Visions). Activision confirms that World Tour will be the “first game ever in the Guitar Hero franchise to allow in-game downloadable content on Wii” — just make sure your SD card is inserted.
